Family & philosophy

Our story begins more than 300 years ago: We, the Hagn family, were already committed to viticulture in Mailberg, Lower Austria. A lot has changed, but somehow nothing has changed – then as now, we devote ourselves day after day with great passion to viticulture and everything that goes with it. Over the years we have always kept our finger on the pulse of the times and today we prove that tradition and modernity are not a contradiction.

Our secret to success? Of course, we won’t reveal exactly how we produce our fine wines here. In any case, what we would like to note is that our family business has been pulling together since day one – and for us, family doesn’t always have to do with direct relatives. We currently employ around 50 people and each and every one of them, with their unmistakable character and tireless commitment, contributes to ensuring that we offer our guests and customers the enjoyment experience that we stand for, day in and day out – whether in our wine gallery tasting fine wines, in the wine domicile, where regional cuisine meets our range of wines or in our shop, from where our specialties conquer the world.

Numerous awards for the wines as well as for the business – the Hagn winery has already been named winery of the year by the Lower Austrian Wine Gala seven times – as well as sustainability as a philosophy and lived passion for winemaking as a leitmotif are proof: our focus is on the future. Because this story has just begun…

Mailberg – the location

The small market town of Mailberg is one of the best-known wine-growing towns in the north-western Weinviertel region. It is situated in the middle of a deep, wind-protected valley, the Pulkautal valley. The vines are particularly happy on the sun-drenched slopes. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta knew this a long time ago and started growing wine here as early as 1140. The soils of the Mailberg Valley are very chalky and covered with loamy sand and loess. This, combined with our special microclimate, gives the wines their distinctive fresh and spicy aroma and produces a great diversity of varieties.

In addition to the classic Grüner Veltliner variety, widely known as Weinviertel DAC and Weinviertel DAC Reserve, the 300 hectares of vineyards present excellent conditions for Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Mailberg is also known as the “red wine island”, and we are particularly delighted to have won the Lower Austrian Wine Award five times in a row with our Blauer Zweigelt.

We have around 50 hectares of vine growing area. Mailberg’s most important and best-known location, the Hundschupfen, is immediately next to our wine estate. On this sandy south-facing slope, the grapes can mature slowly well into autumn thanks to the many hours of sunshine – ideal conditions for the Grüner Veltliner.

Sustainability as a philosophy

In our family business with over 300 years of history, heritage plays a major role. But we don’t just want to pass on knowledge and experience to the next generation, we also want to leave our children and grandchildren with a clear conscience the piece of land that means the world to us. And that’s why we protect it. In recent years we have been able to achieve a lot in terms of environmental protection and resource-saving work – and we plan to continue to do so.

Our winery is heated using an environmentally friendly wood chip heating system. We use solar energy to generate energy. We get all of the electricity for our business from our photovoltaic system. This produces 200kWh daily, so we hardly have to feed in any additional energy. We also rely on alternatives when it comes to mobility: our vehicle fleet is mainly electric.

Sustainability also plays a major role in our everyday life: we source various raw materials from the immediate area via short transport routes, and we fill our wines and juices in so-called “Sustainable Austria” bottles. These are made of lightweight glass and 80% from local waste glass. In order to be able to offer organic wines, we buy organic grapes from a partner company in Mailberg – and process them according to the strictest specifications.

As a company, we are now sustainably certified, awarded by the Austrian Winegrowers’ Association. This has drawn up a comprehensive action plan. Only those who meet all of the points receive the certificate. For us, this is a major milestone on our journey, which certainly doesn’t end here.
